Additional dwellings
This project addresses the need for affordable and appropriate 1-2 bedroom homes for locals and those with a connection to Paekākāriki, particularly for mana whenua, our elderly, young adults, single-parent families, and creatives.
We began early work on this project a few years ago, including hosting a community hui, sharing community stories and developing a visual planning tool for property owners. At the hui, those who had built an additional dwelling expressed a willingness to share what they had learned. While progress paused due to other organisational priorities, a 2025 strategic reset re-elevated the project as a priority.
Kāpiti Coast District Council picked this idea up and recently produced a fabulous new resource “Thinking about adding an additional dwelling? A guide for Kāpiti residential property owners” (see link below).
In light of that work, and with funding from KCDC for the first phase of the project, we have launched Additional dwellings 2.0. We are producing more detailed case studies, and delivering a series of workshops and site visits in Paekākāriki. We’ve started work on our case studies, and planning is underway for our workshops and site visits.
These will be held between March and May 2026.
We want to hear from you!
If you’ve built an additional dwelling, are in the middle of doing that or thinking of doing so, we want to hear from you. If you’re in the business of supporting property owners to build, we want to hear from you.
Watch this space! We have other activities underway, so sign up to our mailing list below and receive updates!
