Impending changes in planning rules and the consequences for the future of housing in Paekākāriki will be discussed at a public hui organised by the Paekākāriki Housing Trust on November 26th.

“With government changes making allowing three-storey and six-storey

developments possible within the village, there is wide interest in what that

means for us, and how our village will look in a decade or two,” says Tina Pope,

a spokesperson for the Trust. “Major changes to the way the

Resource Management Act is administered, and how consents are issued,

are also looming.”

“Given the on-going housing crisis, new housing is essential. We have to

make decisions, sometimes hard decisions, about where that is situated,

how it looks, and how it fits with existing neighbourhoods and

infrastructure.”

“This will be an opportunity for people to inform themselves of how rules

are changing, to discuss the possibilities the changes will create and to

voice their concerns about their impacts”.

A facilitator from The Urban Advisory group will lead the discussion on how

the people of Paekākāriki want to see it grow. Local councillors will also

attend to provide information and answer questions about council’s role in

providing and regulating housing.

The hui will follow the group’s Annual General Meeting held during the

morning at the same venue. All interested residents are welcome to attend.
